Addiction Recovery Chemical dependency along with drug and alcohol withdrawal can be life threatening and should be addressed immediately with a medical professional. Recovery has many obvious benefits including medical, social, and psychological (improves mood, cognition, and sleep). In my practice, once a patient is diagnosed and detoxed with medically acceptable treatments, along with ongoing follow up and treatment of any co-occurring conditions, I often recommend complementary treatments. I almost always encourage participation in Twelve-Step Programs (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous), exercise, and when appropriate recommend my book, "The Recovery Blues: Prescriptions for the Clean, Sober, and Depressed", which can be further reviewed at the website www.recoveryblues.com.
Dr. Lake covers other complementary approaches in the review articles below. These include exercise, nutrition, and Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation. Nonconventional and Integrative Treatments of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (Part 1), Psychiatric Times, February 2007.[160kb, Added April 2007] Nonconventional and Integrative Treatments of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (Part 2), Psychiatric Times, May 2007. Self-Help Books There are several good self-help books to help with recovery. I think www.Hazelden.com is a pretty good site to look for these. Of course, one of my favorites is the Recovery Blues which I co-authored which is available at www.amazon.com.
